Banka BioLoo was an Ocean Exchange Solutions Inspiring Action contest registrant in 2014. Their Bio Toilets solution addresses the malaise of open defection primarily in rural India and urban slums. Bio toilets use patented bio-digester technology and produce minimal byproducts.
September 2015 Update:
Since registering with Ocean Exchange, Banka BioLoo has been working to provide environmentally friendly sanitation solutions in India. Banka BioLoo’s bio-toilets treat the human waste onsite using a naturally inoculated bacterial culture. The bacteria are placed in a specially designed multi-chambered bio-tank that converts the fecal matter to pathogen-free effluent water and small amounts of biogas.
In August of 2014 the government of India initiated the “Clean India Mission”, supporting the building of toilets across the country. Banka BioLoo has been working with a variety of partners and clients to provide eco-friendly sanitation as part of this project.
At the beginning of 2015, many companies, within their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, chose to provide toilet facilities to schools that lacked them. They partnered with Banka BioLoo to provide WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) facilities. The Banka BioLoo team carried the ready-to-assemble bio-toilet systems to the various schools and installed the bio-toilets in the designated schools across different states in India. There are many more such contracts to provide bio-toilets for the remainder of 2015.
Founder Sanjay Banka says “We feel proud and privileged to have the opportunity to provide the much-needed sanitation in schools. The bio-toilets will help reduce student drop-outs, improve the health of kids, and provide the much-needed WaSH facilities in the schools in remote areas.”
