Mark Bauman serves as the Senior Vice President of Smithsonian Enterprises, overseeing efforts to expand the institutions reach through new multi-platform entertainment businesses. Previously, Bauman served as chairman of National Geographic’s Cross Platform Committee where he oversaw the Society’s cross-platform editorial development process, working with National Geographic’s editorial leadership team to decide which large projects the Society would feature across its various media platforms. He has also overseen production of more than 400 hours of programming for the National Geographic Channels and PBS, garnering multiple industry awards, including the Society’s first “Parents’ Choice Award.”

Under his leadership, the Society’s digital video team tripled National Geographic YouTube views and subscriptions over a three-year period, generating 2.5 million subscribers, 1 billion streams, multiple Webbys and other industry awards. He created the weekly television series “National Geographic Wild Chronicles,” which reached more than 2 million viewers a week on PBS, as well as other music and natural history series for PBS, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD and National Geographic Channels International. He has been recognized with numerous broadcast and print journalism honors, including an Emmy, more than a dozen Cine Golden Eagles and various film festival awards.

Before coming to National Geographic, Bauman, who is fluent in Spanish, Russian, Czech and Italian, was based in Eastern Europe and Latin America for ABC News, where he ran Baghdad and Balkan coverage for extended periods of time. He has also covered war, genocide and urban blight in Central Africa, Lebanon, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq and New York for world-class media outlets, including ABC, BBC, CNN, The Christian Science Monitor, The Dallas Morning News, Izvestia (Russia), Ladies’ Home Journal, The London Observer Sunday Magazine, The Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, National Public Radio, New York Newsday, Nezavisimaya Gazeta (Russia), Reflex (Czech), The San Francisco Chronicle, Spy, Time and The Village Voice

Bauman holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and a master’s in international relations from Johns Hopkins University.
